Designed for Staircases


North end of Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu. Staircase beach is for small summer days when you just want to get in the water but want to avoid the crowds. Variable sandbars create small peaks with perfect sized, glassy waves. This is one of the more mellow breaks and super fun for beginners. At low tide, this break can get extremely shallow ride too close to the shore, and the shore will win. The ideal board would is a bigger board with extra foam, making it easy to paddle, and drop into small waves. A cruisy feel with a single fin for stability and control.


Shore One was designed and hand-shaped by Ofir Atia. Intended to increase performance while surfing at Staircase Beach. All key design decisions were strategically based off of location characteristics and personal experiences.

The bottom curve of the board from the nose to the tail is called rocker. It is the curvature of the surfboard that allows your nose to stay above the water when dropping in steep waves. Because Shore One is designed for smaller, slower waves the rocker is fairly flat. The nose has a bit more rocker to prevent the nose from dipping and pearling over the wave.



Bottom Contours


The bottom contour of the surfboard is designed to channel water directing water flow through the board from nose to tail. The bottom contour effects the board's stability, maneuverability, and speed. The Shone One has a flat to single concave then transitions to a vee.  The flat allows the board to be quick, and loose while paddling yet extremely fast and responsive when speed increases. That single concave contains the water flow compressing the water and squeezes it out towards the tail of the board. The vee compliments the pin tail and single fin adding stability and control.




Surfboard fins influence the mobility, stability, and the overall feel of a surfboard. They allow a board to be controlled in the water in a way that would not be possible without them. They help to maintain speed and control while cutting through the water. The board rides the way it was designed, however, when swapping fins it completely changes the way it performs. Three different fins were designed to be tested for Shore One.


Series 4

The series 4 is slightly shorter and has a low degree of rake. This provides speed down the line and improves pivot when turning. These are double foiled and have extra fiberglass making it stiff.


Series 5

The series 5 is the most versatile fin of the three. It has a balance of speed, stability and control down the line and performs well in most conditions. These are double foiled and have medium flexibility.


Series 6

The series 6 is taller and has a high degree of rake. This provides stability and control down the line and calls for drawn out turns when turning. These are double foiled and have less fiberglass at the tip making it extremely flexible.
